Here are some tips if you suffer from nausea and vomiting:
- Eat small meals frequently throughout the day and try not to get too hungry or too full. It is helpful to include a source of protein with every meal to prevent low blood sugar levels.
- Hard candies (peppermint, ginger, lemon), ginger tea/ale, and chewing gum may help.
- Avoid foods or smells that are triggering.
- Try to stay well hydrated. Have regular sips of water or electrolyte replacement drinks.
- The BRATT diet is gentle and may be helpful if you are vomiting regularly (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, tea).
- If your prenatal vitamin is causing nausea, try taking it with food or at a different time of day. Gummy prenatal vitamins may cause less nausea as well.
- Over the counter medication options include:
- Vitamin B6 25mg taken 3 times a day alone or combined with Unisom (doxylamine) 12.5mg or 25mg at bedtime.
- Prescription medication may be needed if the above options do not work.
- Please call our office if you are unable to keep food or fluids down, if you get dizzy, lightheaded, or have minimal urination. Occasionally, IV fluids and medications are recommended for severe vomiting until oral options are tolerated.
